Danny Blyth practises five element acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Cheltenham, alongside some tai chi and qigong. He has taught at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine for more than 20 years, most recently developing a nutrition and yangsheng course. Outside of this he will be found chopping veg in the kitchen, walking in the Cotswolds, or playing with his early jazz and blues band Hot Fingers.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Coffee and necessity – I’m not a morning person!

What makes you feel alive?

Playing in a band and walking in a forest

I’m tied between Dr Shen’s pulse skills and Jimmy Noone’s clarinet technique. Can I have both?

Hmm – it used to be smoking but I’ve given up – maybe I’ll start again.

Fantasy dinner party guests?

Sun Simiao, Louis Armstrong, Zhang Sanfeng, Django Reinhardt – should be quite a party

If you weren’t an acupuncturist then what?

More music I think – or maybe beekeeping

What’s your diagnosis?

Depends who you ask – water CF, ADHD, kidney yin xu, chronic FOMO

Paintings of Sun Simiao and Zhang Jingyue given to me by my friend Linda Upton and commissioned in China by the late great Giovanni Maciocia

Giving a patient a pneumothorax
