Mike Cummings
Doctor & Acupuncturist: London
Shortly after medical school and house jobs, Mike Cummings trained as a General Duties Medical Officer (GDMO) in the Royal Air Force. Acupuncture was an unintended distraction that led him to a full-time career as Medical Director of the British Medical Acupuncture Society – a post he has held since 2001. We asked him to give us some answers…

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Most mornings I stay in bed and practice languages on Duolingo – Mandarin, Portuguese, and Korean currently. Twice a week I head into town early after a triple espresso and hopefully still eight hours of sleep.

What would you save in a fire?

I guess the question is about any material (flammable) things that are particularly important to me… still nothing is coming!

How do you get your qi moving?

Lu Jong – a Tibetan movement practice derived from Tantrayana Buddhism and Bon traditions. Technically, I am now a Lu Jong five elements teacher – quite a transition from starting my career in the military

Advice for your seven-year-old self?

Don’t work so hard, and don’t believe everything you hear from adults, no matter how important they seem to be

Advice for your 70-year-old self?

You made it then! None of us were expecting that! I guess you better keep doing the same 🙂

What makes you sweat?

I used to love sweating from every pore. Now that only ever happens in a sauna or steam room

Your biggest headache?

The negative influence of capitalism in healthcare

What makes you feel alive?

Walking in forests or mountains

Favourite thing in your clinic room?

A pair of eyes with eyelashes drawn on the wall to make a surprised face out of some plastered in holes…

And in your next life?

A tall tree overlooking the Grand Canyon
