While the practice of herbal medicine is not statutorily regulated, the sale of herbal medicines is regulated in law.
In this talk, BAcC CEO, Alex Jacobs will be giving you a crash course in key aspects of herbal medicine law that practitioners need to know. In his previous role as president and then CEO of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM), he had to learn about many aspects of the law to run the organisation.
As acupuncturists it is important for us to be aware of the key aspects of law so that we can manage both the risks to ourselves in terms of legal liability and the risks to patients. This talk will help you distinguish between two fundamental questions:
What is the minimum that I need to do to sell herbal medicines legally to the public in the UK?
What standard do I need to match in order to give myself legal protection in the event of a claim?
The talk will also cover the following questions:
How do I get insured and will I actually be protected in the event of a claim?
Can I sell herbs or products with herbs on my website direct to my patients?
Can I sell food supplements or herbal supplements to my patients? What is the difference?
When is something a food and when is it a herb? Is there a difference if I sell culinary herbs to my patients?
How do I know if the herbs that I buy are safe and how do I demonstrate this to the public?
The talk will be followed by a short Q&A. In the following week, Alex will be hosting a community conversation for a wider member discussion on herbal medicine practice and issues faced by acupuncturists.
