The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is the leading self-regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture in the UK. 

We offer enhanced status and professional standing as we are the only traditional acupuncture body accredited by the government’s Professional Standards Authority assured voluntary register scheme. Meaning our high standards allow members to access patients from private health insurers and the NHS as well as supporting them in the promotion of their practice.  

As an institution, the British Acupuncture Council offer a voice, campaigning visibly for traditional acupuncture. BAcC can trace its roots back to 1961 and has been working tirelessly to promote the value of traditional acupuncture to the public and policy makers since its formation. 

In short, BAcC membership ensures that its Members are well trained, safe and effective – with ongoing quality validated by external scrutiny.

How to apply - Full Membership 

To become a member of the BAcC you must either have graduated from a BAAB approved institution or be able to demonstrate that your studies are in line with our Standards of Education and Training. 

There are three routes into membership, depending on where you studied and how long ago you graduated.  

If you have graduated from one of the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board approved institutions in the last three years, then you can simply register for membership by emailing detailing your name and where you graduated from. 

We understand how challenging it is starting and building up a new practice, so to support you, the BAcC provides reduced membership fees for the first three years post-graduation.  

If you graduated from a BAAB accredited institution more than three years ago and have never registered for membership, please email 

Reduced membership fees are not available to those that have not graduated from a BAAB approved institution. 

If you were previously a BAcC member but have been out of membership for more than 3 years, then the Returning to Membership route has been designed to support you back into membership.  

To apply for membership, email detailing your name and where you graduated from.  

There is no charge for this application process. 

Overseas membership is available to anyone who has graduated from a BAAB accredited institution and is practice in another country, either temporarily or permanently.  

To apply for Overseas membership please email detailing your name and where you graduated from. 

Members who have moved from UK membership to Overseas membership wish to reinstate their UK membership should do so within three years.  

Members wishing to resume UK membership after the three-year deadline will be asked to formally reapply.  

Why be an Overseas Member? 

As an overseas member, you are entitled to use the letters ‘OMBAcC’ and your overseas practice details will be published in the Register of Members on the BAcC’s website. However, please note that it is not possible for overseas members to be covered by the BAcC’s medical malpractice, professional indemnity and public/products liability bloc insurance policy.  

Overseas members will receive regular Enews bulletins, the BAcC magazine ‘Acu.’, and the ‘European Journal of Oriental Medicine’ (EJOM) at regular intervals together with other mailings sent out. Overseas members can also access the members’ area of the BAcC website that has valuable resources available.  

We are currently not able to process applications for overseas qualifications or UK qualifications that are not accredited by the BAAB. Given the current Coronavirus situation, we are directing our resources towards matters here. 

We have been looking at revising this route to application, so please do still email with your details, if you are happy for us to keep your information on file and contact you as we are able to process applications again. 


How to register - Student Membership

All acupuncture students studying at a BAAB accredited institution can register as a student member.  

Student membership is free.  

As a student member of the British Acupuncture Council, you will receive all the information, resources and support you need, right from start of your career, along with the following benefits:
